Direct answers

Start with the decision your project needs to make.

This question library explains auger dosing in practical terms: what the mechanism does, how powder behaviour changes the result, what evidence is needed for accuracy, and how to choose tooling and automation without relying on generic claims.

Each answer links to the relevant Lancing machine, application, test or enquiry page so a buyer can move from an initial question to a usable specification.

Evidence first

Final suitability depends on the representative powder, fill range, production pack, operating method and the acceptance test agreed for the project.

Core questions

Auger filler answers organised by buyer task.

What is an auger filler?

An auger filler is a powder-dosing machine that uses a rotating screw within a filling head to move a controlled volume of product from a hopper into a pack or downstream packaging machine. The correct configuration depends on powder behaviour, dose, pack and automation level.

How does an auger filler measure powder?

An auger filler controls the screw movement for each dose; on suitable machines, a servo drive can repeat programmed rotation accurately. Because this is fundamentally volumetric dosing, stable product presentation and bulk density are important to the resulting mass.

Follow the dosing sequence →

Which powders are suited to auger filling?

Auger filling is considered for many fine, dusty, cohesive and moderately free-flowing powders, but the decision must be based on real flow, density, particle and release behaviour. Products containing fragile or large inclusions may need another route or special trials.

Assess powder suitability →

What affects auger-filler fill consistency?

Fill consistency can change with bulk density, hopper level, aeration, bridging, agitation, screw charge, tooling condition, restart behaviour, pack position and the weighing method used to check results. A useful trial records events rather than reporting only an average.

Define the accuracy evidence →

How is auger-filler accuracy tested?

Accuracy is tested by agreeing the product, pack, fill target, scale, tare method, sample sequence and operating conditions, then retaining individual results across start-up, stable running, refill and restart. Any stated result must identify those conditions.

Plan an accuracy test →

Which auger tooling is required?

The screw, tube and outlet are selected as a matched dosing path for the powder and fill range. Target dose, flowability, particle size, pack opening, free-fall behaviour and clean-down needs can all influence the tooling set.

Review tooling selection →

Should I choose semi-automatic or automatic filling?

Choose semi-automatic filling when operator pack presentation remains practical and flexibility is valuable. Choose automatic filling when pack supply, indexing, product feed and downstream operations can be controlled as a reliable line. The choice is not based on output alone.

Compare operating routes →

How does an auger filler connect to a packaging line?

The filler exchanges ready, request, complete, permissive and fault states with pack handling, VFFS, capping, sealing, coding, checking and conveying equipment. Mechanical height, pack position, dust control, guarding and restart logic must also be agreed.

Define line interfaces →

Prepare a machine enquiry.

Send the powder, loose and settled bulk density if known, fill range, production packs, target accepted-pack output, operator method, utilities, layout and equipment before and after filling.

Use the auger filler enquiry checklist.

Prepare a sample trial.

Agree the product quantity, pack samples, tooling questions, weighing method, operating events and acceptance evidence before dispatching material.

Use the sample-trial and FAT guide.
